Old skool games are coming back as apps

They don’t make video games like they used to. Well, actually they do – many of the classics are now coming back as apps. Here are just a few video game franchises from the past that you can now relive on your mobile phone.

Sim City

The likes of SimCity Deluxe on iOS allow you to relive this classic city building game. Playing as the city’s mayor, you get to construct a metropolis from the ground up whilst dealing with everyday problems ranging from economic turmoil to natural disasters. Another available app version of the game is SimCity BuildIt, which takes a more modern approach to the game, expanding upon the original premises with new buildings and abilities.

Final Fantasy

This classic fantasy saga allowed players to use magic and battle mystical opponents. It’s now been rebirthed in the form of several mobile apps. On top of classic RPG versions, there’s also a strategy-based Final Fantasy 15 app in which you can build cities and raise armies. Many of these games have been developed so that you can team up with players all around the world.

Worms

Playing as a team of worms armed with everything from baseball bats to holy hand grenades, this classic arcade game has also been revived as an app. You can play solo matches against computer players or battle against other games online. Worms 3 is the best version of this game for those wanting to experience the fun of the original and is available on all iOS devices.

Wolfenstein 3D

This 1992 game kickstarted the shooter genre. Your aim is to escape Wolfenstein castle whilst fighting off Nazis and dogs armed with a gun. The iOS app allows you to experience the classic version in all it’s glory, this time with smoother gameplay.

Doom Classic

Fans of Wolfenstein 3D might also be tempted to play the mobile version of Doom. This classic shooter from the 90s introduced players to a sci-fi horror world. The mobile game allows users to re-experience the creepy atmosphere of the original.

Sonic The Hedgehog

The iconic blue hedgehog has also been rebirthed on mobile. Sonic Retro is an enhanced version of 1991 Sega Mega Drive classic Sonic the Hedgehog available on iOS and Android. Beating the game once allows characters Knuckles and Tails to be unlocked. The mobile app has ironed out all the bugs that cursed the original game, allowing for a more fun experience.

Civilization

The strategy game franchise that allowed players to take over the world as a warlord has returned in mobile form. Sid Meier’s Civilization IV: War of Two Cities is available on Android and allows players to live out their megalomaniac fantasies just as the original games did.
