What I Read 37

/

The brilliant thing about hosting a linky is that I get to read some fantastic posts and add to my every-growing list of posts to share. Welcome to number 37 (!) of What I Read, I hope you enjoy reading the posts as much as I did.

Do you ever wonder what it would be like if your kids thanked you for everything you do? This, I'm sure, is what prompted the blog post 'If Kids Gave Gratitude'. It was the first time I'd visited firstooth.co.uk but it certainly made an impression and I'll be back for sure. Please head over there for a read, you won't be disappointed.

The Snowman - Theatre Royal Nottingham

/

/ by
I've said before that I love going to the theatre, and living in Nottingham is great because we have the Theatre Royal nearby. At the start of the year we saw Aladdin there and more recently, and because of a competition win, we went to see The Snowman.

The Snowman

Every Christmas when I was a little girl I remember watching The Snowman on TV. I have fond memories and, even now, it brings a tear to my eye at the end. The TV adaptation of The Snowman will always have a place in my heart, and I hope that will be the same for my children.

When I won a Mumsnet competition for a family ticket to see The Snowman at the theatre I squealed! Literally! The Hubby and I were playing scrabble with BP and they both wondered what was going on.

Hello and welcome back to another Post Comment Love with me and my co-host Stephanie. We have loved hosting this linky so far, long may it continue!

This week seems to have flown by and I don't really remember what's happened. On Wednesday evening we went to see The Snowman at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham, LP had me in fits of laughter when we were playing I-Spy before the show began.

Regular Cereals vs Low Sugar Cereals

/

/ by
Just lately I've been having cereal for my breakfast, it's quick and easy, and tasty.

A hand drawn bowl of cereal with the words "Regular cereal vs. low sugar cereal, which is more healthy?"

I don't like to mess about at breakfast time, I already have loads to do in a morning without messing about trying to make myself a fruit salad or some other 'healthy' breakfast. I'm all about the quick and easy breakfasts.

No New Ideas

/

/ by
There are no new ideas.

I've heard this expression many times and I agree, I don't think there are any truly original ideas. When it comes to writing, film-making, drawing, whatever, there really aren't any new ideas. Anything you can think of has already been done, usually a hundred times over.

So what does that mean for you, should you just give up and not bother?
If your idea has already been done, and done well, what could you offer?

How to Use the Comparison Game to Your Advantage

/

/ by
The comparison game, we all know what it is right?

When you look in magazines and tell yourself you'll never be as pretty or as thin as the actress/supermodel on the cover.

When you scan photos on Instagram and tell yourself you're not as talented as the person who took the photo.

When you scroll through Pinterest to see hundreds of pins about crafting the perfect homemade gift - something you could never do.

Zero Progress

/

/ by
It's not just zero progress this week but minus progress, I've put on weight. All of my clothes are too tight and my jeans won't fasten.

I refuse to buy bigger clothes though, I just need to work hard to get back to where I was.

I'm going back through my old posts, checking all of my health and weight loss tips and making sure to follow them. They were my words and I did do it, I have photographic proof that it's possible to lose the weight. Effort is required though and I need to focus on that, I need to do it.

Last week I did do some yoga, it was only one day but I did it. I think I need to make time for it. I didn't want to take time away from the blog but if I don't do something the weight will just creep on, I'll give in and buy bigger clothes and then I'll be back to where I was years ago.

It's so easily done.

Running isn't an option yet but yoga is good and we have a cross-trainer too. A few minutes on the cross-trainer wears me out but at least I know I'm working hard. I need to get that feeling back, the one that fills me with joy when I've worked hard.

It's going to take time, I know that, but the effort will pay off.

I haven't spent as much time as I'd have liked reading this week. I am enjoying co-hosting #PoCoLo though and I do get to read all the posts that link up, which is great.

Mrs Tubbs, who writes at Someplace Strange

This time of year it can be difficult to stay cheerful, miserable weather and dark days certainly don't help. In 8 Ways To Make Yourself Feel Happier Mrs Tubbs shares some tips to help us out. There are so many different ways you could try and make yourself happier but in this post she lists a few you might not have thought of. Reading it came at just the right time for me, I'm hoping I can do the same for someone else by sharing it here.

Post Comment Love 22nd-24th January 2016

/

As the week has gone on my head has felt more and more full. The housework is piling up, I want to blog more, and the kids need my attention.

Post Comment Love Linky badge

As a result my head is so full of things to do and ideas of things to write that I feel bogged down by it all. I sat at the computer on Thursday afternoon struggling to write anything. I've been so concerned with making sure I write every day that I've let other things pile up and now they're getting on top of me so that I can't concentrate on writing.

Finding Joy When The Bus is Late

/

/ by
Yesterday, as usual, I sent BP out of the house at 7:50am so that he could catch the bus to school. He text me at 8:25am to say that the bus hadn't turned up and I told him it was probably late and he should keep waiting.

Red Bus, "finding the joy when the bus is late..."

When I drove LP to school at 8:30am BP was still waiting at the bus stop so I told him I would take him to school if he was still waiting when I drove past on my way home.

What Pet Should I Get? By Dr. Seuss Book Review

/

/ by
Dr. Seuss and I weren't properly introduced until LP was born and I began reading bedtime stories to him. I knew straight away that both LP and I were big Dr. Seuss fans and when I learned that What Pet Should I Get? was to be released I couldn't wait to read it.

From Cat in the Hat to Oh The Places You'll Go we've read as many Dr. Seuss books as we could get our hands on and so when I was asked to review this new book I almost squealed!

Health & Weight Loss - A Little Progress

/

/ by
I'm not quite sure how I'm feeling about my weight loss at the moment, I've made a little progress but I'm not 'feeling' it.

A quote from Edward Stanley "Those who don't make time for exercise will have to make time for illness".

My weight has gone down but my energy levels are still low. I'm thinking I need to force myself to put on gym clothes and do something, whether it's yoga or something else I need to start making an effort.

I've noticed a pattern and it's not good.

Welcome to the 35th instalment of What I Read and I'm looking forward to sharing some great posts with you.

Louisa, of Life as we know it blog

The start of the year is always a great time to look at home improvements, I'm hoping for a new bathroom at some point and I'm sure you all have some fabulous ideas for your home. So does Louisa and in Plans for a major bedroom renovation she talks about her bedroom and the plans for improving it. It sounds like a big job but I'm sure she'll love it when it's all finished. Good Luck Louisa.

Welcome to my second week of co-hosting Post Comment Love with Stephanie, and this week I'll be hosting the Newbie Showcase too. Thank you to everyone who linked up last week, you made our first week very special.

Over the past week I've felt super busy even though I finished most of my scheduled work. I had a wonderful birthday weekend (thanks to everyone who sent me such lovely messages) and the boys have been loving being back at school.

How to cope when a migraine hits... and you're a mum

/

/ by
Being a mum (or a dad) is hard work, you get up in a morning and your day gets off to a hectic start as you hurry to get the kids ready for school. But what happens when you wake up with a migraine?

If you've never suffered with a migraine then you're lucky I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

A migraine isn't just a headache, oh no, it combines the pain of a headache with nausea, aversion to light, and feeling like you've had your energy sucked out of you.

If you haven't already guessed I suffer with migraines. They don't attack me daily but I get at least one every month. I used to suffer a lot more when I was on the pill but since stopping taking the pill the migraines' regularity has eased.

Hosting Christmas Lunch

/

/ by
Cooking Christmas Lunch is challenging enough when there's four people (me, the Hubby, and our two boys), but this year we invited the Hubby's side of the family. I had 15 people to cook for!

Cooking for 15 people is not easy, I can tell you. On Christmas Eve I was stressing over how I was going to manage to cook everything without letting something go cold.n My brainwave came when I realised that my microwave oven is a Panasonic combination microwave oven. My microwave can be used as an oven, and a fan-assisted oven at that! Luckily that meant I had three ovens for the day and it worked out great. I cooked the Turkey in the large oven, my stuffing and various other things in the small oven, and my roast potatoes in the microwave oven.

Health & Weight Loss - Post Christmas Update

/

/ by
It's been a while since I wrote a health and weight loss update and after the Christmas period I think it's finally time to get back to it.

I always struggle at the very start of the year because Christmas has only just passed, the fridge is filled with deliciousness, and my birthday is soon to come.

My birthday was this weekend and there was lots of eating and drinking involved. Needless to say I gained a few pounds! To be honest though I haven't weighed myself since before Christmas so the gained pounds are probably a combination of Christmas, New Year, and my birthday.

I took rather a long break from What I Read but now that we're well and truly into the swing of things I thought I'd bring it back.

What I Read post badge

I've read so many great posts over the past couple of months, some of the posts I share are from a while ago but please don't let that put you off. Every single post I share has entertained me in some way, so I'm hoping they'll entertain you too.

Snoopy and Charlie Brown The Peanuts Movie StoryBook Review

/

/ by
I remember watching Charlie Brown and the gang on the TV way back when I was a little girl. I loved the show and enjoyed watching Charlie and Snoopy's antics.

I had no idea they had made a movie until I saw advertisements everywhere.

LP would've liked to see the movie, and it would've been lovely to sit with him as we both enjoyed it!

Relaxed Performance of Aladdin at Theatre Royal, Nottingham

/

/ by
On Wednesday evening we visited the Theatre Royal in Nottingham to see a Relaxed Performance of Aladdin. It was the first Pantomime I'd seen in a while (we're talking years) and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Aladdin on his magic carpet, Theatre Royal, Nottingham

From the moment we sat down in the auditorium you could feel the magic of the Theatre and LP couldn't contain his excitement. There were a few shrieks from him as we sat waiting for the show to start.

Hi everyone and welcome to the very first linky I have ever hosted!

#PoCoLo or Post Comment Love was one of the first linkys I ever linked up to and I hope you will help Stephanie and I keep Victoria's baby going. It will be hard to fill Vicky's shoes but as co-hosts we will try.

I'm having a super busy week so far, and with my birthday on Saturday I think there might be a pyjama day in my future! I would love to have a lazy day on Saturday, I'm also hoping that no cooking will be required (hint hint Hubby).

New Year, New Bathroom

/

/ by
I love the New Year, it always feels like a fresh start. Once the kids are back at school I'm eager to get back into routine, start eating healthily and plan my changes for the house.

Home, a house.

Let's face it, when the new year rolls around we all start planning for home improvements. We've already decided that we need to decorate LP's bedroom, it's been on the list for a while. Over the next few months I'll be talking to LP about what he wants and gathering ideas so that when Easter comes around we can get on with it.

Bedrooms are not my priority though. One thing that has bothered me about our house ever since we moved in (just before BP was born 11 years ago) is our family bathroom.

Keeping Joy in Mind for 2016

/

/ by
After a fantastic Christmas break I'm back. It has been truly amazing spending time with the family from Christmas Lunch for 15 to board games with the boys.

In past years we've seen the Christmas holidays fly by and before we know it it's time to get back to work. We always complain about how fast the time flies and wish we had another week. Well, that bit is not different but the time we've spent with the boys has been brilliant.

None of us spent all our time playing computer games, even though we all got them for Christmas.

We've found new board games we love to play, we've draw pictures together, we've built lego.

I've also spent time reading, learning, and making plans.

I am ready to take on 2016 and I'll be keeping the word 'joy' in mind.

Over the break I happened to look at a website on Facebook, it was just a simple little thing. You put in your name and it told you your word for the year. I don't usually like that kind of thing but I was messing around and did it for fun.
