How to Use the Comparison Game to Your Advantage

The comparison game, we all know what it is right?

When you look in magazines and tell yourself you'll never be as pretty or as thin as the actress/supermodel on the cover.

When you scan photos on Instagram and tell yourself you're not as talented as the person who took the photo.

When you scroll through Pinterest to see hundreds of pins about crafting the perfect homemade gift - something you could never do.

Comparing yourself to others' accomplishments is usually a bad thing, it makes you hate yourself and wonder why on earth you try with anything when so many other people are so much more talented than you.

These are the words I often hear when scrolling through Pinterest, Instagram, even Facebook and Twitter sometimes. My inner voice attacks me and asks me why I'm even trying.

Sometimes I agree and my confidence is deflated. I give in for the day and 'realise' that I can't be as good as them. The rest of the day is usually spent in self-pity. Not good.

Other times though I disagree with that voice, in fact, I argue. I tell it it is wrong and that I am capable, if I wanted to I could do those things.

Using the Comparison Game to your advantage

It was the comparison game that brought me to writing.

Back in 2011 I considered myself a 'lowly housewife' and with LP about to start nursery I had no idea what I was going to do with all that extra time. I was scared that I would become one of those people that clean the house constantly and have nothing else to do.

At the time I was reading a book by an author who was also a mother and after reading a blog post of hers I was inspired. That blog post led me on an exciting journey and I found a love of writing.

If it wasn't for comparing myself to that author I may never have tried writing, I would never have started a blog.

When you look at those Instagram or Pinterest pictures don't tell yourself that you can't do it, ask yourself if you can.

If you tried could you recreate that cake?
If you tried could you take that perfect photo?
If you tried could you write a blog?

Forget about what other people do, don't think about how successful others are. They are not you and your journey will be different.

Don't get dragged down in the can't, think about what you can do, about what you would like to do - and do it!

The only person stopping you, is you.

The comparison game can be a good thing, you just have to use it in the right way!
