Social Media Sites You Should Be Using

/

/ by
When you start blogging it can be overwhelming trying to decide which social media sites to use. There's so many of them and you don't know how to use them effectively.

I have been blogging for almost four years, I've tried out lots of different social media sites and the sites listed are the ones I've found most useful.

My recommendation would be to keep your branding the same for all accounts. Use the same profile picture and header (blog banner) throughout.

Facebook

Anyone who is anyone knows about Facebook. Friends, family, businesses, everyone has a Facebook account and some even have pages too. You probably already have an account, but do you have a page?

A Facebook page is the best way to get 'fans' of your blog and promote your posts to your readers. I would recommend having a profile picture of yourself and your blog header as your banner. Keep your branding consistent and people will begin to recognise it.

Twitter

With an estimated 310 million unique monthly visitors Twitter is the place to be. A 140 character limit on tweets means you have to be concise but it helps to refine your writing. Again have a profile picture of yourself, and your blog header as your banner (or something similar).

Twitter can be used to promote blog posts, help others out by retweeting their posts, and chatting to friends. Try to tweet about different things, don't just self-promote as people will get bored of it quickly. Tweet to your friends, brands you love, anyone.

Google+

If you set up your blog on Blogger you already have a Google+ account, you just need to log in and set up your preferences. This is one of the great things about Google+, the integration with everything Google means you can set up Google+ to automatically share your blog posts when they go live.

Another great thing about Google+ is Circles, there's no need to send hundreds of friend requests and wait patiently for the confirmation. You use Circles to add whoever you like, they don't need to confirm or agree to be added. You can even divide up your friends into groups such as "Writers", "Bloggers", or "Parents".

Sharing others' posts is a great way to get yourself noticed.

Pinterest

One of my favourite boards - Style.

Pinterest is great for finding useful articles, pretty pictures, even fabulous recipes. You can like, share, and re-pin all pins you find. Create boards filled with ideas for your child's bedroom, your favourite sunset photos, or shoes. Share your boards, find ideas from others, and connect with friends.

WARNING: Pinning can become addictive - be careful!

Instagram

You'll need the mobile app for Instagram but it is a lovely way for your readers to get to know the real you. Take the time to share photos from your day, these can be anything from a photo of your coffee cup to a gorgeous sunset you're witnessing.

Sharing photos from your day is how people get to know you.

LinkedIn

Mostly used by businesses and professionals I think LinkedIn is often overlooked by bloggers. Really it's just like other social media sites and allows you to share your blog posts. LinkedIn also allows you to connect with other bloggers, brands, and industry experts.

A blog post I shared on Linked In.

Klout

Klout uses your social media analytics to rank you, your score can be anything from 1 to 100. Use it to track how your other social media accounts are doing, share interesting articles you've read, and schedule tweets or status updates. You can increase your influence on social media by giving 'klout' to other Klout users, often they'll return the favour!

Track your score for the last 90 days.

StumbleUpon

Another place to share your blog posts StumbleUpon is also somewhere to find interesting (or funny) articles. They are very strict about self-promotion so I would recommend sharing one post per day, and try to share others' work too, but it's a great platform to spread the word.

Use StumbleUpon to find articles you enjoy reading, photos you love, even music you want to listen to. Find something you like and hit the thumbs up icon, you'll soon be seeing more of the stuff you like. If you stumble upon something you don't like click on the thumbs down icon and you'll see less of that kind of article.

There are hundreds of social media sites you could be using but these are the ones I'd recommend looking at first.

You can connect with me on each of the sites listed:

  1. I had never considered using linked in and rarely use stumble any more. Pinterest and Instagram are my favourites but I don't think I use any form of social media as effectively as I might.

  4. Great list, I am an Instagram addict! I post a handful of pictures each day, I don't think a day goes by where I don't post. I'm trying to get into G+ at the moment and I will definitely check up Stumbleupon. Ray xx #binkylinky

    1. I like StumbleUpon because it brings up pages I might like without me searching for them. It's great. Oh yes, Instagram is becoming a bit of an addiction for me too. :)

  5. I have all of them plus Periscope. I don't really use StumbleUpon. I guess it is because I don't know yet how to use it. My favourite one is Twitter and Instagram. I love them. :-) x

    1. I've heard of Periscope but the idea of vlogging terrifies me, I'm no good in front of a camera. Yes, Twitter and Instagram are my faves too! :)

    1. There are loads and it can be difficult to work out how to use each one the best way. I think it's best to work out how it works for YOU. It's all about personal preference. :)

    1. You're right, it's easy to jump straight into all of them and not do any very well. It's best to do it in stages like you. Be sure to follow me when you're on the sites and I'll follow back. :)
