Health and Weight Loss Tips 18

I am suffering today but it's the kind of suffering that makes me smile. Yesterday I ran a local 5k fun run and finished in 38 minutes. My muscles ache and complain whenever I go down the stairs or try to walk a little faster. Each time I feel the muscles tighten and the ache shoot up my legs I smile. I ache so much because I worked hard yesterday.

10st 10.1 lbs

66, 663 Steps

Although, saying that yesterday I weighed 10st 9lbs and I have no idea why I put on 1.1lbs, but it's still down from last week so I'm considering it a win.

I did more than 10,000 steps on 5 different days last week. Another win!

Me at the start of the fun run

Yesterday, not only did I run the 5k in the morning but the Hubby decided he wanted to go for a walk in the afternoon. No wonder I ache so much.

Anyway, this week I wanted to discuss sustenance after a run or workout. I have been running/walking with friends for months now and I've noticed a trend. After each workout I am famished.

It's as if the workout kick-starts my hunger and I can't help but snack on naughty food. It began ages ago and I would sneak a chocolate bar after each run. That is until I realised I was defeating the purpose of my run.

I always drink a pint of water after a run, I sweat so much that it figures I would need to replace that water. But what I've been struggling with was what to eat, if anything.

I tried not eating anything, drinking my pint of water and trying to ignore the roaring noises coming from my tummy. Needless to say this did not last long.

I then tried eating breakfast bars, including Special K and Alpine. Just one bar after a workout seemed to help but it still felt like I was cheating. After all those bars are more sugar than anything and I always felt guilty about eating them.

So what to do?

Morgan's Milieu | Health & Weight Loss Tips 18: A bottle of Strawberry flavour Upbeat (a protein shake)
One day, while I was doing my weekly shop, I walked past protein shakes and stopped to have a look. I didn't think it was the kind of thing I was after but wanted to check them out.

I ended up buying two bottles of Upbeat, a blueberry one and a strawberry one. After my next run, instead of grabbing a breakfast bar I reached for my Upbeat.

To tell you the truth I wasn't expecting much, it tasted so yummy it felt like I was drinking milkshake. It certainly didn't feel like I was being 'healthy'. I drank the whole bottle in about 2 minutes, shrugged my shoulders and expected hunger to hit at about 10:30am as usual.

When my computer alerted me that it was 11:45 I made lunch for me and the Hubby. It wasn't until later that I realised the Upbeat had worked. I'd gone all morning, after a 2 mile run, without wanting to eat before lunch.

Tip: Try a protein shake after a work-out.

Morgan's Milieu | Health & Weight Loss Tips 18: A red faced Morgan Prince
Looking rather red after the run!
Upbeat worked brilliantly for me and it is my go-to drink after working out. Yesterday when I'd completed my fun run, the first thing I did when I got home was reach for my Upbeat.

If your workout results in you munching on more food, not less, then perhaps you ought to try a shake. Every time I drink a shake after my workout I can last until lunch time before wanting to eat. And when you're trying to lose weight that can't be a bad thing!

  1. Good advice Morgan and well done on achieving the 5km. I always feel such a sense of achievement at the end of a run and the medal is a great reminder of what we have achieved. Keep going!

    1. Thanks Sue. Yes the sense of achievement is amazing and that medal is something to cling to. I'm so proud of myself for doing it. Although saying that, I'm still recovering ;)

  2. Well done on the 5k fun run, what a lovely medal! I too could quite happily eat for England after a run so will definitely be trying protein shakes afterwards, trying to ignore the tummy rumblings always makes it worse! Hope you are having a lovely week and thank you for the Upbeat heads up, I shall be checking them out! Sim #WeightLossWednesday xx

    1. Glad to hear you'll be trying out the Upbeat, I love them and would recommend them to anyone who asked. Getting rid of those rumblings is tough after a run.

      Have a great weekend. xx
