My Love of Movies

Mama and More

First of all I want to thank Luci over at MotherWifeMe for making my post last week a feature on her #AllAboutYou post this morning. Luci you have made my day!

When I was a little girl I dreamed of the day a prince would come and save me from my boring life. I watched movies like Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and The Little Mermaid, sang along to the songs and wondered why my life wasn’t like that. Why didn’t I get the boy I liked? I was a bit of a geek if I’m honest but I still imagined that one day ‘my prince would come’.

This isn’t a ‘happy ever after’ post where I tell you he did and we’re married and have a fabulous life, blah, blah. I want to tell you that all those years ago is when my love of movies began. All the girly ones are great and get better as you grow up, I remember watching Jerry Macguire about one hundred
times. Those movies that have two people falling in love are fantastic and you always feel good when they’re finished. I think rom-coms are my favourite with Love Actually at all time number one movie. Moulin Rouge and The Holiday are up there too. It’s no surprise that I enjoy these movies, after all I am well-and-truly in their target market but these aren’t the only movies I like.

Fracture starring Ryan Gosling and one of my all-time favourite actors Anthony Hopkins is dark and compelling. The story is fantastic and the acting - brilliant. I love the ending but I don’t want to tell you about it - Go watch it! I promise you won’t regret it. Another ‘dark’ movie I think is fantastic is Seven with Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey. A serial killer is loose and the detectives try their very best to find him. Kevin Spacey plays a brilliant part in this movie and is very convincing. Another movie that I suggest you see if you haven’t already.

On a lighter note Simon Pegg is amusing in Shaun of the Dead and Paul but my favourite movie starring him and Nick Frost has to be Hot Fuzz. Me and the hubby know the script to this movie and have watched it so many times that I think the DVD may be broken! It’s funny and has a great story - another must see.

Most of the movies I have mentioned above are fairly old now and having two children and a busy life we don’t get much opportunity to go to the cinema anymore. We do, however, get to rent the movies on the Apple TV, which is better than nothing. A movie we did manage to see at the cinema was The Great Gatsby which was directed by Baz Lurhman. There’s a talented man. We love most of his movies including Moulin Rouge, Romeo & Juliet and The Great Gatsby - all of which are on our favourites list. The Great Gatsby is an amazing movie which draws you in from the moment it starts. If you do see it try to pay attention to the music too because the soundtrack for this movie is awesome, I have it playing most of the time while I’m working. Now You See Me was another movie from last year but this one we rented and then later bought on DVD. A great movie that is a little different.

My favourite movie of last year? Gravity.

This movie is unlike anything else I’ve ever watched and we’ve seen it twice at the cinema. The second time was just as good as the first even though I knew what was coming and although the cast is minimal it is a fantastic movie. If you wanted a recommendation Gravity would be it. There is no way to describe this movie other than to say it’s about space. If I said anymore I would give away the story. If you are bored of all other movie types give this one a try - it is completely different, a breath of fresh air.

So there you have it. I LOVE movies and when I’m not taking care of the children, doing housework, cooking meals or writing then I’m watching movies. I like being able to escape into another world while I watch people’s lives unfold in front of me. Maybe it’s the writer in me that thrives on this stuff or maybe it’s just the escapist, either way I enjoy myself (as long as the movie isn’t terrible). This year I’m looking forward to seeing The Lego Movie in February.

I’m linking up this post to #AllAboutYou Link & Pin Party, you all know me a little better now and I got to give recommendations for some great movies. Win, win I say! :)

Do you have any favourite movies you’d like to recommend? Tell me below and I’ll give them a try if I haven’t seen them. Have a great day everyone.

    1. Don't blame you Kim, it is a fantastic film. The hubby and I watch it every Christmas Eve after putting the kids pressies out. It's our Christmas tradition now and I don't feel like it's christmas until I've watched Love Actually. :)

  3. Ah see, the thing for you Morgan, is that you are a Prince, albeit a female one!! Thanks so much for linking up to #AllAboutYou again this week, your post last week was so spot on for what #AllAboutYou is all about! Loving this one about movies, we caught up on so many over Christmas and even got to see Anchorman 2 at the cinema... yes, an actual trip to the cinema... I know Gravity sounds amazing, but I'm still not sure about seeing it, though you've swayed me more than any of the reviews I've read to date. Just about to pop off and pin this post to the #AllAboutYou Pinterest Board x

    1. I think the #AllAboutYou link is a great chance for us all to get to know one another away from the children and housework! I've heard that Anchorman is quite good, is that true?

As for Gravity - you totally should see it. We saw it at the IMAX in Nottingham and it was fantastic - definitely good on the big screen. It is a compelling film that makes you think about what all astronauts must go through every time they take a trip above the earth. Really - see it. ;) xx

  4. Brilliant post, thanks so much for all the reviews - *chucks TimeOut into the recycling*

We watch lots of movies as hubby is part of BAFTA, but actually watched Now You See Me on a flight and I really enjoyed it. Thanks so much for joining in with such great posts to #AllAboutYou - it's really wonderful to get to learn more about people. xx

    1. Thank you!

BAFTA - wow! I'd love a job where I watched movies and got paid to comment - that would be awesome. We often don't agree with the mainstream opinions on movies. One example is Melancholia - this is one movie I will never watch again. Yes it was very artistic but I did not like that movie at all. However a lot of people I talk to really liked it. That's the thing with movies, everyone has an opinion. ;)

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. xx

    1. I used to love horrors Jaime but I think I've turned into a bit of a wimp as I've aged, I'm not so keen these days. Particularly the more gory ones. Thrillers I like, especially if there's mystery in there too. x

    1. I haven't seen The Full Monty for years, don't think I even own it! Must remedy that. We've had a time of watching older classics just lately and mostly they've been good. I love movies like Psycho (the original) and 12 Angry Men.

  8. Loved this #AllAboutYou post! I'm a big film fan too. I even have geeky little traditions like re-watching some of my favourite films at certain times of the year. Jan/Feb it's normally Annie Hall, The Way We Were and Beautiful Girls and Lost In Translation or any Wes Anderson film when I'm feeling angsty. I love a film recommendation!

    1. Ah thanks Katy. I love film recommendations too although I have to say if I watch something from a recommendation and then don't like the film I tend to ignore future recommendations. At least unless there's good reason to see the film. x

  9. Great films you've mentioned. For me, my very favorite that I watch every year around this time is Chocolat. I can't not watch it. :) And I love quirky films like Amelie. The Crow is my favorite "dark" film. And I'm a sucker for older movies like Cool Hand Luke. Stopping by from the #AllAboutYou blog hop. :)
