My Hero

/ by
A while back my eldest son came home telling me about his work at school. They’d been asked to draw a picture of their hero and explain why they’d chosen that person. He chose a computer game character (they were told that was ok) called Spyro. His explanation was that Spyro helps people.

It made me think about my hero. Did I even have one? To be honest I’d never thought about it but when I did the person that popped into my head surprised me. It was Rolf Harris. When I was a kid I watched Rolf’s Cartoon Club every Saturday and loved to try and copy his cartoons. As I got older I watched him on Animal Hospital and through the years I have listened to his music, seen videos of him performing ‘Jake the Peg’ and laughed when he did his noises. Rolf Harris is one of those men that has been around in the public eye for years. We all know and love him.

I watched him on a Piers Morgan show recently and was hooked. The show was an hour and forty minutes long but I could’ve watched it all night. On it I heard how Rolf hadn’t always been the jolly fellow we all know and love. He’d been through some tough times and made hard decisions that he regretted but he also spoke about how much he loved his family and how he rocked Glastonbury! In 2010 he played to a crowd of more than 100,000 people. He was 81 at the time! Can you believe that? Rocking Glastonbury at 81 is amazing. I think the fact that he is always so jolly must aid in ageing. I hope that I can be that happy when and if I reach that age!

Rolf did one show in Nottingham recently and you’ll never guess what... I missed it! Me and the hubby were so disappointed when we found out and whenever we hear his songs playing on the iPod we complain that we missed that show. It would’ve been awesome. All we can do is hope he does another. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

There are lots of people that I respect, even more that I admire, but Rolf Harris took the title of Hero. He is such a talented man and has utilised those talents throughout his life. He hasn’t let them go to waste or ignored them but at the same time he has a family he loves. Sometimes you find that famous people ignore or neglect their family or don’t have one in the first place. At 82, Rolf has managed to keep his marriage together through good and bad times. Family is important. It’s the most important thing in my life and when we find someone who loves us and will stick by us through everything we should cherish it. Rolf has done his best to do that.

I truly think that man is awesome! So have a think about it, who is your hero and why? Are you surprised by your choice? Is it someone famous or someone you are close to?
Having someone to look up to is good, it gives us all something to aspire to. I always try to be a caring person, has Rolf influenced that? I don't know but he is someone I look up to. I'm hoping that I can use my talents to the best of my abilities and maybe I'll still be going when I'm 82. I could have a whole library of books published by then!

The heroes in our lives push us further than we might push ourselves and sometimes, as a consequence, we achieve a dream we never thought possible.

    1. Thanks! On the Piers Morgan show they showed a clip of him doing the portrait of the Queen. He managed to get her chatting and on the painting she was smiling, which has never been done before apparently! I think his love of life is wonderful.

  2. Wow I can believe Rolf Harris is 82! In my mind he hasn't aged since the days of Cartoon Club. Need to go off now and have a think about who my hero is. x

    1. I know, it's unbelievable! Although if you look at photographs of him through the years he doesn't look any different. Same hair, same beard, same smile. Maybe a few extra lines here and there but this man is prove that enjoying life is the antidote to growing old. Let me know who your hero is, I'd love to hear about them.

  3. Rolf Harris is truly awesome. Great article Morgan - I think that my hero is Galileo, for saying the world was round when everyone else said it was flat (and even doing some jail time for his beliefs!)
